Delay in releasing bridge design plans under fire

The contending design plans for the new Pensacola Bay Bridge should be made public before the state officials pick one, area leaders said today.

Santa Rosa County commissioners and other members of the intergovernmental Florida-Alabama Transportation Planning Organization voted to press Tallahassee to show renderings of the plans by the project’s five would-be contractors in advance of the scheduled July 18 selection.

The Florida Department of Transportation considers the plans confidential until the agency picks one—restricting public comment until after that.

They also asked that a scheduled July 7 public meeting about the bridge plans be moved to downtown Pensacola from Milton.

A spokeswoman for FDOT said she would relay the local volunteer board’s requests to her agency’s higher ups.
