New park’s lack of restrooms questioned

The county’s new $750,000 Bagdad Mill Site Park that’s scheduled to open May 16 will be a recreational showplace, but some tourism leaders have questioned why it won’t have public restrooms.

“We need bathrooms at parks where families will bring their children,” said Kyle Holley, a member of Santa Rosa County’s volunteer Tourism Development Council, after learning last week that Bagdad Mill will have portable toilets for the foreseeable future.

The omission of restrooms in the 20-acre park is because of lack of funds. Much of the park’s budget came from various grants, said Sheila Fitzgerald, grants and special projects director. She said there aren’t any grants currently available that can be applied to public toilet facilities.
