Courthouse size and funding to be cut

Santa Rosa commissioners took a long look at the latest engineering cost analysis of a new county courthouse and agreed that the projected size and estimated $50 million tab must both be scaled back.

The panel also acknowledged that the proposed local sales tax increase of one cent on retail purchases be cut in half and that the levy be for five years.  The 2014 referendum to pay for a new county courthouse included a one-cent sales tax to be levied for five years.

“I think we need to get this reduced to something people will pay for,” said District 1 Commissioner Jayer Williamson.

The board is working on a draft of ballot language on the sales tax for another vote in either August or November. The courthouse’s size and cost, along with the tax, will be discussed further at Thursday’s commission meeting.

An article in the May 12 Navarre Press reported incorrectly that the tax, which failed, was to be for 10 years.
