Richardson signs with Coker College

Marcus Richardson has been playing basketball since he started school and his goal from the beginning was to land a spot on a college basketball team.

Humble, soft-spoken and hard-working, the Navarre senior achieved the goal this spring, signing a national letter of intent with Coker College, an NCAA Division II school in Hartsville, S.C.

“I’ve been playing since I was 5 or 6 and I’ve always wanted to play in college,” Richardson said. “It’s great to see the dream come true.”

Richardson played an integral role for the Raiders this past season, leading Navarre to the regional tournament for the first time in more than a decade and helping the team set a school record for wins in a season (17).

Navarre head coach Taf Bentley said while it would have been easy for Richardson to fill the stat sheet night after night, his standout center always put the team first.

“Not once this season did he talk about what he needed to do as a player.  It was always about the team,” Bentley said. “There were a bunch of times he could have had all kinds of unworldly stats, but that is a credit to his character. I’m happy for what he has a chance to accomplish and his potential, I don’t think, has been reached yet.”

Richardson said interest on the recruiting trail didn’t pick up for him until his senior year. Coker turned out to be the best fit.

The Cobras compete in the South Atlantic Conference and are coming off a 9-17 campaign. They will be under the direction of first-year head coach Aric Samuel, who was an assistant with the team the last three years.
