Raider lifters cap impressive year at state meet

The curtain lowered Saturday on Navarre’s impressive boys weightlifting season.

The Raiders sent a record eight lifters to the 2A state meet at the Kissimmee Civic Center and three placed in the top six, the exclamation point in a year where Navarre won district and regional championships for the first time in program history.

“It was a great experience,” Navarre head coach Jay Walls said. “The improvement and success we had is a credit to the kids for their hard work and a credit to coach (Garrett) Bagley for what he does with the overall strength program. He set a goal for us to improve on last year and we accomplished that.”

Brent Short had the top finish for the Raiders, placing fourth in the heavyweight division with a personal-best total lift of 720 pounds.

Hasaan Williams (169) and Chandler Mapoles (199) both placed sixth in their respective weight classes. Williams came through with a total lift of 570 pounds and Mapoles had a total lift of 640.

The other competitors at state were Lee Jones (154), Michael Sandle (169) Xavier Fernandez (183), Derrick Smith (199) and Nick Brahms (heavyweight).

Jones had a total lift of 520 pounds and Sandle finished with a lift of 560 pounds. Fernandez came up with a total lift of 590 pounds, Smith recorded a lift of 600 pounds and Brahms had a total lift of 655.

“It was a huge season for us,” said Bagley, an assistant on the team who also serves as Navarre’s strength and conditioning coach. “It gives us a lot of momentum going into next year. We have a lot to build on.”
