Raiders earn big win over Eagles

Navarre’s softball team watched its five-run lead get trimmed down to a single run early in Wednesday’s non-district game against Pine Forest.

Rather than fold, however, the Raiders responded. They scored seven runs in the fourth inning and went on to secure a 15-5 win over the Eagles on a chilly night in Pensacola.

“That’s the thing about this team. They have heart,” first-year Navarre head coach Kelly Hayes said. “It might take an inning to figure it out but they always come back. I’d take this team into battle with me any day of the week.”

Navarre led 5-0 after one inning, with Allie Dukes and Tara Bowling both driving in two runs apiece with base hits.

Pine Forest scored four times in the third, slicing Navarre’s lead to 6-4. Momentum could have easily slipped away at that point and the Raiders’ losing streak could have been extended to three games.

Instead, Navarre put together a productive inning. It was highlighted by Kallie Anderson’s RBI-double and KK Trombley’s two-run single. Callan Taylor knocked in a run as well with a base hit.

“We took advantage of our opportunities,” Hayes said. “We even put in some girls from our bench that did very well. We have a deep bench and don’t just have to rely on our starting nine.”

That much was evident in the fifth inning when Britney Silver and Madison Faulkner both brought runners across the plate with triples to give the Raiders the win by virtue of the 10-run rule.

The Raiders cranked out 14 hits in all, including three apiece by Jordyn York and Anderson. York and Anderson each drove in two runs as well.

Trombley came through with two hits, scored twice and knocked in two runs.
