POLICE: OFFICER SHOOTS, WOUNDS ARMED MAN

A man was hospitalized in critical condition following an officer-involved shooting after a woman asked for help from police in getting personal items out of a house in Lakeland.

OFFICIALS HOPE TO CLONE 2,000-YEAR-OLD CYPRESS TREE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA

Samples were collected Monday from the 90-foot-tall cypress tree known as Lady Liberty in Big Tree Park in Seminole County. Lady Liberty is considered the sister tree of the former 3,500-year-old cypress tree called the Senator, which burned down in 2012 from arson.

Ernest Pate was charged on Sunday with attempted robbery with a firearm and other charges. A Marion County Sheriff’s Office report says Pate was wearing all black and carrying the AK-47 on Saturday when he entered two different stores.

Police say the child was shot three times in the torso on Monday evening. Miami-Dade Det. Marjorie Eloi says Eric Watson Jr. talked to medics when they arrived to help him around 7:30 p.m.
