Helpful Healthy Holiday Habits

Consumer Reports conducted a poll about what people fear most about the holidays. In the top 3 results was weight gain. The New England Journal of Medicine says we gain an average of 1-3 pounds per year. So how do we enjoy ourselves during the holidays and not end up paying for it later? Here are some helpful habits to establish:

De-stress in advance

Use up some vacation time, treating yourself to a spa day, giving yourself permission to sleep by going to bed early, or sleeping in. Stress blocks your body’s natural fat-burning ability. If you are a caregiver for a loved one, you will need to plan and have extra patience. If you are a relative or friend of a caregiver, offer to help them with preparations or actual respite from their caregiving duties during this hectic time.

When you’re stressed your body unleashes a hormone called cortisol, otherwise known as Public Health Enemy No.1. Cortisol actually slows down your metabolism to a crawl.
