Miss Kim shares stories of traveling life

Kim Fenger sits back in a comfortable chair inside her room at The Beacon in Gulf Breeze and recalls a time when the world was a much different place.

Known as Miss Kim to family and friends, Fenger was born in Korea in 1932 and remembers growing up in a country that was under the grip of Japanese rule.

Life wasn’t easy then. Her grandfather, a general in the army, was hung by the Japanese in a tree. Her father was barely in her life and her mother passed away when she was a child.

If there is one thing that helped make life a little more bearable in a difficult era, it was that Fenger excelled in school.

“I was a good student, always at the top,” Fenger said. “I loved to draw, I was good at making things and good at acting.”
