Deputies were dispatched to a Panhandle Trail apartment for a fight in progress at about 9:30 p.m. Oct. 17. Upon arrival, deputies found two men with stab wounds.

The victim, Raymon West, age 51 of Pensacola was stabbed multiple times by the suspect, Herbert Helton, age 47 also of Pensacola. Helton also suffered a stab wound.

According to the report issued by the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office, West claimed that Helton attacked him with a knife while he was lying in bed. West also said that he attempted to fight back to defend himself and he ran out the door while Helton continued stabbing him from behind multiple times. West indicated he had no idea why Helton wanted to stab him.

West was transported by air ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital. The suspect was also transported to a local hospital. The two remain hospitalized.

“The incident is being investigated by the Major Crimes Division and we expect the suspect will be interviewed this afternoon,” said Maj. Bob Johnson, Commander of the Law Enforcement Division for the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Since 2012, Helton has been arrested multiple times in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties. The list of charges includes two felony counts of larceny and dealing in stolen property in Dec. 2012; an Aug. 2013 charge of DUI, hit and run; multiple probation violations; and a 2015 felony charge of shoplifting and out-of-county warrant. West’s arrests include a felony battery charge in 2014 with a charge of obstructing justice.
