Winner Covington stays active, healthy as a runner

John Covington didn’t start running again because he had plans to compete. He did it for his health.

“I started up about five years ago because I wanted to lose weight and get my blood pressure down,” said Covington, a resident of Navarre. “I eventually did a race here in Navarre and that kind of spurred me on to keep going with it.”

Covington wasn’t new to running. The 60 year old ran in his 40s as well, competing in a race or two each year.

“I quit for about 10 years and let myself go,” Covington said. “I started out slowly when I got going again, just walking at first. It took me awhile to get back into shape; but now I’m a lot faster than I was when I was in my 40s.”

Covington said he runs about four times each week, logging between 20 and 22 miles and runs in 20-25 races each year.
