Animal shelter near capacity

The Santa Rosa County Animal Shelter is near capacity with about 250 animals under its roof. A compilation of strays that have been picked up by animal control and owner surrenders; the number of animals has stretched the shelter’s walls. “On any given day, we will average 150 or 160 animals,” Thomason said.

The shelter receives generous donations from Santa Rosa County residents but still has needs. Kitten and puppy food is usually at a minimum and there is a steady need for treats, toys, bedding, food bowls, leashes, shampoo and shredded paper. They will host an adoption event on Thursday, Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the shelter located at 4451 Pine Forest Road in Milton. The adoption fee is $30.
