Bethell making most of first season with Argonauts

Kameron Bethell never imagined he would score a goal in his first college soccer game. But when the opportunity came, he made sure to capitalize on it.

“It was unbelievable really,” Bethell said. “The ball came out and I hit it. I couldn’t believe it went in. I couldn’t imagine making an impact right away.”

The goal by the former Navarre standout came off a rebound and helped the University of West Florida tie the score at 1-1 in its season opener against Tampa last month. The Argonauts went on to win it 2-1.

The big moment proved to be a confidence builder for Bethell, who currently has three goals and an assist for the nationally ranked Argos.

“It really did give me confidence,” Bethell said. “Before the game, my legs felt heavy and I was a bit nervous. The second the ball ended up in the back of the net, it helped propel me forward.”

Bethell, a four-year letter-winner with the Raiders, has adapted well to the college game, playing a key role in a turnaround season for the Argos. West Florida is 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the Gulf South Conference. The Argos won only six games all of last year.

“It’s been a dream come true,” Bethell said. “This is a great level of soccer and I have good teammates and coaches. We mesh really well together as a team.”
