Epstein, Tucker lead way at Stampede

Sophia Tucker finished 34th in the Gulf Coast Stampede Saturday morning at the Equestrian Center in Pensacola and gained a great deal from the experience, especially with the district meet less than a month away.

“Even though you are running against people from different areas, it gives you an idea of what is out there if you make it past the district meet,” Tucker said. “There are a lot of good runners and competing in this meet definitely pushes you to run hard from beginning to end.”

Tucker finished the race in a time of 21:42, which was good enough for the best finish among runners in District 2-3A.

Evenay Hooley also finished in the Top 100 with a time of 23:01. Margaret Johnson (23:18), Lauren Bilby (23:28.60), Alexis Patel (24:22.70), Khiara Newton (25:43.10) and Camille Grace (29:32.50) also competed for the Raiders in a field that featured nearly 300 runners.

Johnson, Newton and Patel are only freshmen. Hooley is a junior and Grace is just a sophomore.

Tucker enjoys being a leader on a young team.

“It’s pretty cool,” Tucker said. “I now see what my friends saw when they were seniors and I was a freshman. I love helping them out.”
