Raiders thriving behind strong offensive line

If there is one place the spotlight rarely shines, it’s on the offensive line. Recognition for the guys up front is limited at best, but their role is crucial to the success of any football team.

If the Navarre Raiders didn’t get the performance from their offensive line in the early part of the season, their story could easily be a much different one right now.

Instead of 3-0 and a No. 9 ranking in the 6A Associated Press poll, they are potentially looking at a 1-2 record or perhaps even 0-3.

“It’s going really good,” senior center Brent Short said. “We’ve been productive and have really come together. We’re playing really physical and that has been a big help. We’re getting after people.”

Short is joined up front by left tackle Darrell Hixon, right guard Michael Moffo, right tackle Mathew McLeod and left guard Nathan McMaster, who was moved over from tight end prior to the start of the season.

Nick Brahms and Corey Capenia are returning starters from last season but both started the year injured. Brahms is healthy again and Capenia could return this week.

Either way, the line has been impressive, helping the Raiders to score 142 points and churn out more than 1,000 rushing yards.
