Tucker running for success with Raiders

Sophia Tucker hasn’t been a runner her entire life.

The Navarre Raider actually started out as a swimmer.

“I was on the swim team as a freshman,” Tucker said. “I swam for about five years. But my mom was a runner and my dad started speed-walking. I started running on the weekends and my mom said to go ahead and try running cross country.”

Adjusting to a different sport took time but her experience as a swimmer paved the way for success.

“It was helpful from an endurance standpoint,” Tucker said. “I started running as a sophomore and I developed more as a runner. I also ran the mile, the two-mile and on the 4×800 relay team.”

Tucker has come a long way since her sophomore season. A year ago, she made it to the regional meet where she finished 37th in a time of 20:09.30.

“I got a 23:00 my first race and I ran a 19:59 last year,” Tucker said. “I’m hoping to beat that time this year. I’d like to get in the 19:30s or sub-19:00. I’m always trying to take seconds off my previous race. I’m happy if I can take five seconds off here or 10 seconds there.”
