The Navarre Raiders are just outside the top 10 in the AP Florida high school football poll that was released Tuesday.
The Raiders, off to a 2-0 start after dominating wins over Dothan (AL.) and Pensacola Catholic, received 15 votes in the Class 6A poll. Escambia also received 15 votes. The Raiders and Gators play Oct. 9 on Homecoming night for Navarre.
Two teams Navarre will face later this season are ranked in the top 10. Niceville checks in at No. 4 and Choctaw is ranked seventh. Navarre faced Choctaw Sept. 18 at Bennett C Russell Stadium. The Indians defeated the Raiders twice last year, including in the second round of the playoffs. Navarre takes on Niceville Nov. 6 in the final game of the regular season.
Mainland is ranked first in the latest 6A poll and Armwood is second, Miami Central is third. St. Augstine is fifth and Heritage is sixth. Naples, Lake Gibson and Tate round out the top 10.
The Raiders are back in action Friday when they travel to Pensacola to take on Washington.
