BP oil spill dispersal agency starts up

The new non-profit agency formed to manage Northwest Florida’s share of the $1.5 billion in BP oil spill settlement funding has been formed, but it’s not yet functional.

Triumph Gulf Coast, led by Allan Bense, its volunteer chairman who is a former speaker of Florida’s House of Representatives, held its first public meeting earlier in August in Destin, and its potential has been lauded by area government leaders and news media.

Although Triumph’s main missions are economic development and environmental protection, what form those will take isn’t clear. The legislation that authorized Triumph specified that its money must be spent in the counties most impacted by the spill: Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Gulf, Franklin and Wakulla.
