Crime falling as Navarre area grows

The quickening pace of population growth in Santa Rosa County is testing law enforcement’s capacity, but meanwhile
most crime categories are actually on the decline of late, especially in the fast-growing Navarre area.

“Almost everything is going down: grand theft, vehicle burglaries, shoplifting—all falling by double digits so far this year,” said Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Bob Johnson in an interview last week.

One exception is violent crime in the county, which rose in 2014. But Santa Rosa still has a lower rate of such incidents, including murder and sexual assault, than all but four of Florida’s 67 counties—and a pace less than one-third of the state overall.
