Visions of not just another bridge, but an icon

Steve Dana doesn’t have a bridge to sell you, at least not exactly.

But the landscape architect who is leading a volunteer campaign is seeking your buy-in to plans for a new Pensacola Bay Bridge that is as iconic in its own way as the spans in Brooklyn and San Francisco are in theirs.

“This bridge should be special. We don’t deserve something that looks like it comes over a creek,” said Dana, speaking to a Rotary Club of Pensacola luncheon crowd earlier this week.

Indeed, Dana’s concept includes a roughly 100-foot-tall arch from which cables secure a stretch of what would be a suspended bridge. “It could be iconic and say, ‘Welcome,’” Dana explained.
