Gulf Breeze hires new official from pool of one

The hiring of a new $61,000-a-year administrative assistant by the City of Gulf Breeze without considering other applicants or advertising the job is drawing fire from Joe Henderson, the mayor pro tem.

“I don’t know of anyone else who has been hired this way in the six years I have been on City Council,” Henderson told the Navarre Press on Saturday after a scheduled budget workshop morphed into a 4-1 council vote to fill a job that doesn’t even have a formal title yet.

But the vote was taken, with Henderson the lone dissenter, after a brief discussion in which City Manager Edwin “Buz” Eddy personally recommended Nathan Ford, who is listed on the University of West Florida’s website as “associate director of employer connections.”
