A black bear cub was captured in a trap outside a home in Holley By The Sea Monday afternoon.
Alli George, who lives at the home on Everglades Drive, said the bear has been seen in the neighborhood often and even had one of her chickens killed by it. The bear was estimated to be 2 years old.
Kevin McDonald of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, arrived on the scene to take the bear away and said the FWC will make a decision on what to do with it.
“They will go back and look at reports from past incidents with it and make a determination,” McDonald said. “The problem with a bear like this is that it’s become habituated to the area, especially when you see it out at this time of the day, and that is hard to break.”
Relocation of the bear is an option but McDonald admits its difficult to do because it’s hard to put a bear into another area without risking the chance of it being a threat to a neighborhood again.
