Police: Girl accidentally shot by father during gun safety lesson

Police say a South Florida man trying to teach his 12-year-old daughter about gun safety accidentally shot her in the arm. Davie Sgt. Pablo Castaneda says he father was showing his daughter the gun Sunday night when it discharged. She was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Castaneda says detectives are investigating the incident. Police have not revealed the father’s identity.

Woman set to appear in court on charges of killing father, 6-year-old daughter

A Lakeland woman is set to appear in court on first-degree murder and tampering with evidence charges after the bodies of her father and 6-year-old daughter were found inside a shed. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said 25-year-old Cheyanne Jessie was arrested after detectives found inconsistencies in the account of the whereabouts of her family members, who were last seen July 18. Jessie reported her 50-year-old father Mark Weekly and 6-year-old daughter Meredith Jessie missing on Saturday. After searching throughout the night, detectives found their remains in plastic totes that had been placed inside a shed on a neighbor’s property about 200 yards away from Weekly’s home.

Bail hearing set for man charged in backpack bomb plot

A bail hearing is set for a Florida man charged with plotting as an Islamic State sympathizer to detonate a backpack bomb at a beach. The hearing Monday in Miami federal court for 23-year-old Harlem Suarez of Key West will also determine if he has a permanent lawyer. Suarez is jailed on charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Man accused of killing pregnant sister after argument over utility bill

A man has turned himself in after being accused of killing his pregnant sister during an argument over a utility bill. Fort Lauderdale Police Capt. Frank Sousa announced on Sunday that 25-year-old Willie Ward was taken into custody without incident. Police say Ward was arguing with his sister, 29-year-old Jaquinda Wright, in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night when he punched her twice in the head, causing her to collapse. Authorities say Ward fled the scene in a car. Wright was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Inmate captured after a month on the run

A 20-year-old inmate has been captured after a month on the run. Marion County Sheriff’s deputies say they received a tip Sunday that Alvin J. Richardson was in the area. He was taken into custody without incident. The Ocala Star Banner reports Richardson escaped from the Santa Fe Bridge Community Release Center in Alachua County on July 1. Richardson was serving a 15-month sentence for strong arm robbery. He was being held without bond at the Marion County Jail.
