Oops! GOP chair might not be allowed at party’s big event

When the Republican Party of Florida holds its premiere fundraising event of the year and hosts the GOP’s presidential candidates, its chairman, the House speaker and 79 other Republican representatives might not be able to attend. That’s because the Legislature plans to be in special session during the event and Chairman Blaise Ingoglia is a state representative. House rules bar members from fundraising while the Legislature is in session.

Sheriff: Undercover deputy shoots man who attacked him

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office says an undercover deputy shot and wounded a man early Thursday in Lake Worth. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Therese Barbera said the undercover deputies were in the area when they witnessed a drug transaction between a man and a woman. They identified themselves as deputies when another man appeared. He began hitting of the deputies with a backpack. Barbera said the deputy gave numerous commands identifying himself as a law enforcement officer while showing his badge. The man continued striking the deputy, backing the deputy back to his vehicle. The deputy grabbed his weapon and fired, striking the man in the leg.

Police search for driver who ran over crash victim

South Florida authorities are looking for a hit-and-run driver involved in a crash that left two people dead. Plantation police say a pickup truck crashed into a concrete utility police early Thursday morning. A passenger — 37-year-old Jennifer Catherine Jacon — was ejected and died at the scene. Officials say the truck’s driver — 31-year-old Patrick Michael Kallman — survived the initial crash but was run over by a white or silver sedan as he crawled away from the wreck. Kallman was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Family finds intruder sleeping on couch

A South Florida family says they came home to chicken bones and empty beer bottles on their kitchen floor and an unknown man sleeping on their couch. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office reports that deputies found 22-year-old Jacob Miller still asleep when they responded to the Lake Worth home Monday. After taking Miller into custody, the deputies reported finding numerous items of jewelry on the man that belonged to the family.

Hulk Hogan’s privacy lawsuit against Gawker set for 2016

A Florida judge has set a trial date in wrestler Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against a website over a sex tape. Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Court Judge Pamela Campbell on Thursday set the trial for March 2016. Hogan — a reality TV star and by far the biggest name on pro wrestling marquees for most of the ’80s and ’90s — is suing the news website Gawker. Gawker and its owner, Nick Denton, maintain that the New York-based company had the right to publish the video because Hogan, by his sexually explicit banter during media appearances, had lost any expectation of privacy.
