Coast Guard continues search for missing Florida teens

The Coast Guard scoured the waters off Florida on Monday, searching for any sign of two 14-year-old fishermen who disappeared three days earlier as they headed toward the Bahamas. On Sunday, the Coast Guard located the teens’ 19-foot boat about 67 miles from where they were last seen buying $110 worth of gas. The center-console boat had capsized but it didn’t appear damaged. Coast Guard Petty Officer Steve Lehmann said it is considered an active search and rescue case. There were storms in the area at the time Perry Cohen and Austin Stephanos started their trip Friday. Despite their age, they have been described as experienced boaters.

Crews search for missing paddle boarder

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a man who went missing while paddle boarding off of Florida’s Atlantic coast. Officials say the sister of 58-year-old William Morlock notified the Coast Guard command center in Miami on Sunday that her brother had not returned from a paddle boarding trip. She told officials she last saw Morlock on Friday evening at the home they share in Fort Pierce. He had been preparing his paddle board for use. Search crews looked for the man throughout Sunday night and into Monday. It wasn’t clear whether the search would continue Tuesday morning.

Vacationing man dies while diving off Florida Keys

One diver died and a second was rescued off of Boca Chica in the Florida Keys. Monroe County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Becky Herrin says the men were diving in the lower Keys Monday afternoon when they became separated from their boat. A 17-year-old who stayed on the boat lost sight of the divers and called to report the men missing around 3:15 p.m. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard searched for the men. They found 70-year-old Michael Currie of Key West and returned him to his boat around 5 p.m. The body of 63-year-old Roger Arrowood of Edenton, North Carolina, was found a short time later floating face down.

Human remains found during search for Jacksonville boy

Authorities searching for a missing Jacksonville boy found the remains of a man in the woods near a business park. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Sgt. Craig Waldrup says the remains found Monday included clothes and had apparently been there at least a year. The remains were taken to the medical examiner’s office for a full investigation. Waldrup says foul play didn’t appear to be involved. The body was found while some 200 law enforcement officers looked for 21-month-old Lonzie Barton who went missing Thursday night in Jacksonville.
