$600K project to alleviate crowded YMCA

It won’t come as a surprise to the 4,400 members of Navarre’s Betty J. Pullum Family YMCA that it is time to expand.

The YMCA opened its doors in 2006 and has grown 450 percent, culminating in an at-capacity crowd. The 15,000-square-foot facility is buzzing with activity day and night with members seeking room in fitness classes and their time on the cardio and weightlifting equipment.  Parents seek out the YMCA as caretakers for their children through Pre-K, before- and after-school programs and summer camp. This year, more than 20 families were turned away because the summer camp program was full.

The planned expansion includes a 6,000-square-foot building which will serve as a self-contained youth center and will house the pre-kindergarten classrooms and  child care. The building will free up the space currently used for  child care for an expansion of the gym area and will provide more space for fitness classes.
