Four rescued from capsized sailboat in Gulf

Four vacationers from Louisiana are praising the U.S. Coast Guard and Navarre Beach Fire Rescue personnel for their safe rescues after their sailboat capsized roughly one-half mile offshore in the Gulf of Mexico during rough weather.

“They were super,” Dic k Briody, said, adding, “They did an awesome job.”

Department Chief Mike Howard comforted Briody’s wife, Cindy, as she waited on the shoreline for news. She reported seeing the boat’s jib break before the vessel overturned.

Howard said a water spout had been spotted in the area, and his department deployed its jet ski, which rescued Briody’s daughter, Ashleigh, 26, and her best friend, Jessica Reed, 25.

Cindy cried tears of joy when she was reunited with Jessica and Ashley, who said her father’s calm, reassuring demeanor was helpful during the incident.

According to Howard, the jet ski then returned to the Gulf and intercepted a Coast Guard rescue boat which retrieved  Dic k Briody, 68, and Jason Neu, 26.

None of the boaters required medical assistance.
