Dangerous surf – two water rescues in Gulf

Friday afternoon a 29-year-old female was rescued from turbulent Gulf waters and transported from the west end of Gulf Boulevard to a local hospital by Lifeguard Air Ambulance. A short time later a distressed swimmer was rescued near Navarre Beach Fishing Pier.

Santa Rosa County Public Information Officer Joy Tsubooka reports the female was in stable condition but taken by air ambulance due to the threat of secondary drowning from saltwater the victim may have taken into her lungs.

“In patients with secondary drowning conditions, particularly salt water, they use air instead of ground transportation, even when stable at initial evaluation,” Tsubooka said, pointing out air transportation is usually reserved for trauma alert situations.

According to the National Weather Service, a high rip current risk remains in effect this weekend and is likely to continue into the first of next week.

More details will be posted as they become available.
