Woodberry overcomes challenges to win state championship

T.J. Woodberry tried to fall asleep the night before the 2A state weightlifting meet at the Kissimmee Civic Center. But his nerves betrayed him.

“The night before it I was really nervous. I didn’t get any sleep,” Woodberry said. “I even took a shower to get that cold and relax. I went to bed around 1:30 a.m. or 2 a.m. It felt like 6 a.m. came fast, but I tried not to complain. I kept going with the day.”

By Friday afternoon, the Navarre senior was facing an uphill climb in his quest to become the first male state weightlifting champ in school history.

He came through with a lift of 250 pounds in the bench press, which isn’t bad at all. The problem was three other lifters benched 255. One benched 265.
