Senate seeks one-strike rule in youth sports

Navarre Youth Sports Association baseball commissioner Darrin Thomas understands what the Florida Senate is trying to accomplish with a bill that would impact youth coaches in 12-and-under leagues.

He also believes Senate Bill 238 is going a little too far. Under the bill, a coach thrown out of a game would be banned for the remainder of the season. The coach could return the following year if deemed qualified.

“I agree with the spirit of the bill because we want people to understand that it’s about the kids,” Thomas said. “I think the punishment is a bit excessive.”
