Cloudy skies and the threat of rain didn’t stop a group of young surfers from catching waves Sunday. In fact, the weather churned up the Gulf, making the conditions that much better.
More than 30 children and about 15 volunteers spent most of the day at Navarre Beach for the third annual Autism Surfs.
“It’s open to all ages, from 2 to 25, whether they have disabilities or not,” Erin Lewis, a mother who attended the event, said. “You have a lot of kids who are non-verbal, or who don’t have social skills. Anyone on the spectrum can be limited … but getting them on a board, they realize they’re free and they can do what everyone else can do.”
