Raiders shine at district track meet

Navarre track standouts Khorri Newton, Seira Sanchez and Charles Orth all won district championships at the 3A District 2 track meet Saturday at Emerald Coast Middle School in Santa Rosa Beach.

Newton won a title in the high jump for the second consecutive year, reaching a height of 5-foot-4-inches while Sanchez took home the championship in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking in with a time of 49.74.

Orth was a champion in the pole vault, soaring 12-6 to take home the title.

All three athletes will advance to the regional meet April 23 at Chiles High School in Tallahassee.

Several other athletes also finished in the top four to earn spots in the regional.

Cameron Mayweather was second in the long jump (20-2 3/4) and Veronic Matechick took second in the 100 hurdles (17.73). Sam Basham was the runner-up in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.19. He also placed second in the 300 hurdles, crossing the line in 43.32.

Navarre’s boys 400 relay team punched a ticket to the regional as it took third with a time of 44.50. The girls placed fourth in a time of 53.61.

Austin Epstein finished fourth in the 1600 (4:46.37) and Sophia Tucker placed fourth in the 3200 (12:20.03).
