A Navarre woman was arrested March 27 on a charge of animal cruelty after police found one dead hamster and a number of animals living in squalor at a mobile home on the 8200 block of Lucena Street.

Police charged Carolyn Jane Fowler, 45, with a first-degree misdemeanor after they discovered nine cats, a bird and fish inside the home who “appeared to be in distress and frail,” according to the report.

The cats were so severely infested with fleas that deputies needed to be decontaminated following the arrest.

Fowler was released on $1,000 bond. The animals were transported to Santa Rosa County Animal Control for treatment. Animal Control advised there may be additional charges pending.
