No charges in bicyclist’s death

A Navarre man who struck and killed a bicyclist while driving on U.S. 98 will not face criminal charges following a homicide investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Arian James, 38, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche westbound at about 10 a.m. on Oct. 29 when FHP said he drifted out of the westbound lane and onto the shoulder.

Lawrence F. Anderson, 73, of Conroe, Texas, was riding his bike westbound, just across the street from the Santa Rosa Sound RV Resort.

James hit Anderson, causing his bike to overturn and killing him instantly.

Police said James continued across the 87 southbound exit ramp, through a drainage ditch and into the tall grass that separates the drainage ditch from the tree line, where he hit a tree before coming to a stop.

James was transported to Baptist Hospital in Gulf Breeze with minor injuries, according to FHP.

The investigation determined that no criminal violations occurred and James received a mandatory court appearance for failure to drive in a single lane.
