Competition challenges kindness in students

A few weeks ago, Edward Slater saw a homeless man outside of Tom Thumb.

“I gave him $10 and then I went inside and bought him a drink,” the Woodlawn Beach Middle School student said.

Slater and fellow classmates on Bus No. 744 spent most of November practicing random acts of kindness thanks to the encouragement of their bus driver, Donna Patterson.

“So many kids come in with earbuds and they tune out everyone and everything, and they don’t even say ‘hi’ to me,” Patterson said.
