Locals speak out about proposed Seashore plans

Local management staff with the National Park Service ignited a storm of controversy last week after announcing plans to charge hefty fees to use the sole island connector uniting Navarre and Pensacola beaches.

They also infuriated local fisherman with plans to eliminate late-night fishing at Gulf Islands National Seashore (GUIS).

“I definitely oppose it,” Pasco Gibson, a local fisherman, said. “There’s a lot of recreational fishing there. You can’t commercial fish in the park, but the recreational fishermen use that area a lot for mullet, trout and red fishing in the Sound.”
