19 fatalities prompt south Santa Rosa bicycle-pedestrian plan

The statistics are shocking. Since 2006 there have been 110 accidents involving bicycles or pedestrians along the congested U.S. 98 corridor between Navarre and Gulf Breeze — 19 of those were deadly.

In an effort to engage the community in developing a plan to improve transportation safety in the south end of the county, Santa Rosa County staff, with support from West Florida Regional Planning Council staff, recently facilitated three focus group meetings in Gulf Breeze, Navarre and Tiger Point.

Tiger Point resident Margaret Cunningham serves on the Community Traffic Safety Team, which is managed by the Florida Department of Transportation. The purpose of the team is to identify dangerous areas for bicyclists, pedestrians and vehicles and propose potential solutions. Team members participate in community events to promote traffic safety, and toward that end Cunningham attended the Nov. 12 focus group meeting.
