Fire and Water raises funds for fire departments

After raising $2,500 for both the Holley-Navarre and Navarre Beach fire departments in June, Brad Helwig of Lagerheads decided to host a scaled-down version of Fire & Water Saturday, Oct. 25.

Off-duty firefighters enjoyed free drinks while supporters bid on items during the live and silent auctions. Members of Not Quite Fab performed Beatles hits during the evening.

Helwig, who moved to the area from Texas, said in the aftermath of the April flooding, he wanted to help the community and was surprised that nonprofit agencies, such as the American Red Cross, and national and state agencies didn’t respond to Navarre.

He knew the local firefighters were on scene, and he wanted to lend them a hand.

“The fire departments worked four days straight in the flood,” he said. “They had no time off. They didn’t have the equipment for the people in wheelchairs in inches of water. So I thought, what can we do to help them and took them on as one of our two charities. So we have the turtles and the fire department. One is fast and one is slow.”

He said he hopes to raise thousands of dollars to help Navarre Beach purchase the K12 saw the department needs and for Holley-Navarre to purchase its four-gas meter.
