Milton’s 100-hour mayor

“History was definitely made,” said Wesley Meiss, new mayor of the City of Milton, during an Oct. 14 special session to install new city leaders.

Meiss succeeded the city’s first black mayor, R.L. Lewis, who served just 100 hours in the seat.

Meiss noted Mary Johnson, the city’s first black female elected to the council, was also sworn in during the session.

Former longtime mayor Guy Thompson lost a re-election bid to Meiss in the Aug. 26 primary. Thompson made a surprise move Oct. 6, announcing he would resign early from office.
