5 Things to Know in FloridaFLORIDA’S NEW UNEMPLOYMENT NUMBERS DUE OUT

New unemployment numbers that could help Gov. Rick Scott are due out. Scott is scheduled to announce the June jobless rate on Friday. That’s a sign that the news is likely to be better than it was last month. The unemployment rate in May rose to 6.3 percent, and the state lost nearly 18,000 jobs. It was the worst job loss in the nation.

FLORIDA MAN GUILTY IN BOMB THREAT, BANK ROBBERY

A Florida man has pleaded guilty to attempted bank robbery using a fake bomb and making bomb threats against the Publix supermarket chain in a $50 million extortion case. After Brian Henderson pleaded guilty Thursday, a federal judge sentenced him to more than 15 years in prison.

OFFICIALS ENDORSE WATERFRONT CUBAN EXILE MUSEUM

Commissioners in Miami-Dade County have endorsed giving waterfront county land to a Cuban exile museum. The decision instructs Mayor Carlos Gimenez to begin negotiations with organizers pursuing the non-profit museum. County officials voted in favor of the plan at a meeting Thursday.

WORKER DIES OF APPARENT ELECTROCUTION

Police say a refrigeration company worker was found dead of apparent electrocution on the roof of a northeast Florida convenience store. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office reports that 47-year-old Robert Wagner of Orange Park had been working on a cooling unit at the Kangaroo convenience store. A police officer on patrol at 2:30 a.m. Thursday found the body after noticing a ladder on the side of the building.

WARDEN FIRED OVER PRISONER’S 2012 SCALDING DEATH

The head of prisons in Florida says a warden has been fired after an inmate was left in a scalding shower until he died in 2012. Department of Corrections Secretary Mike Crews said in a news release Thursday that it has taken too long for leaders at Dade Correctional Institution to investigate the death of Darren Rainey. Rainey was a mentally ill prisoner who was punished in 2012 with a shower so hot that his skin separated from his body.
