Lauren’s Kids walk Highway 98 for sexual abuse prevention

laurens-kidsLauren Book, founder of Lauren’s Kids, was a victim of childhood sexual abuse for six years at the hands of her nanny. Armed with the knowledge that 95 percent of sexual abuse is preventable through education, Lauren sought to turn her experience into a vehicle to prevent childhood sexual abuse and heal survivors.

Book’s bus, along with a handful of supporters walked through Navarre and Gulf Breeze Thursday on their way to Tallahassee. The group started in Key West and is walking across the state to raise awareness for the prevention of child sexual abuse.

“This is our fifth time doing a walk,” said communications director Claire VanSusteren as she walked along Highway 98. “People can join us along the way. Lauren first started this five years ago as a personal  journey to heal as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.”

Lauren’s organization educates adults and children about sexual abuse topics through an in school curriculum, a 24-hour Crisis Hotline and speaking engagements around the country.

The organization also provides more than 4.5 million educational and awareness materials statewide through direct mail every year. The ultimate goal is to prevent sexual abuse through awareness and education, and to help survivors heal with guidance and support. Read more in the April 24 issue of Navarre Press or subscribe online here.
