For three weeks Santa Rosa County Commission Chairman Jim Melvin heard citizens protesting county plans to spend $3.75 million on a site for the proposed courthouse. Opposition was so strong that Melvin felt it doomed the entire project, which depends on voters passing a temporary sales tax increase. Therefore, he added site selection back to board’s agenda March 13.

Now voters will decide if they want to fund a new courthouse and whether or not they want to buy new land for it or use land the county already owns in East Milton.

“The public acknowledges the need for a new courthouse, but they’re adamant that no new property be purchased to build one,” stated Melvin.

Commissioner Don Salter opposed reconsidering county land. “We went through a process, went through a geographic population study,” said Salter.
