Navarre area may see more F-35s

If the Air Force gets its first choice for operating the F-35 joint strike fighter, then Navarre residents may see more of them in the skies around the area.

The Air Force Friday released the Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the F-35’s operation at Eglin Air Force Base and surrounding fields. The document shows the Air Force has identified Alternative 1A as the preferred alternative, which uses Eglin as the main operating base and Choctaw and Duke Fields for auxiliary fields.

“If Alternative 1A is selected, then I anticipate more F-35s utilizing Choctaw Field in the Navarre area,” said Mike Spaits from Eglin’s Public Affairs Office. The document estimates more than 20,000 annual air traffic control operations associated with the F-35 at Choctaw.

Kathleen Ferguson, Acting Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Environment and Logistics, and her team will now review the document and must wait at least 30 days before issuing the record of decision.
