Nelson, Miller ‘OK’ with latest Gulf drilling proposal

The US Department of Interior next month will offer more than 40 million acres for oil and gas exploration in the Gulf of Mexico off the coasts of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Neither Senator Bill Nelson nor Congressman Jeff Miller oppose the Obama administration’s proposal to offer the acreage in the Gulf for drilling.

“The proposed drilling areas are in keeping with protections in place for Florida,” Nelson said in a statement from his Washington office.

According to the department’s website, “Sale 225 is the first of only two lease sales proposed for the Eastern Planning Area under the Obama Administration’s Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program for 2012-2017. The Eastern Planning Area is south of eastern Alabama and western Florida with the nearest land being 125 miles northwest in Louisiana.”

“The two areas that are being closely watched are directly south of Pensacola. They appear to be outside the mission line area. I feel as though it will not impede the military mission and it can move forward,” Miller said during an interview Monday in Fort Walton Beach.
