The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) Friday identified 36-year-old Roman Skoedopole of Garland, Texas, as one of the tractor trailer drivers who died in a multi-vehicle crash Tuesday night on I-10 at the Blackwater Bridge in Santa Rosa County. Skoedopole was one of two drivers, whose bodies were recovered from the Blackwater River earlier this week. The FHP has not yet released the name of the other driver.
The traffic crash happened at approximately 7 p.m. Tuesday and involved four tractor trailers and one vehicle pulling a U-Haul trailer all heading westbound on I-10. According to the accident report, during the chain of events, one of the tractors traveled over the concrete bridge rail and fell into the river. The weather conditions were deteriorating at the time of the crash.
The driver of one tractor trailer, David Mattadeen, age 56, from Palm Bay, Florida, sustained minor injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, 64-year-old William J. Smith, Jr., and his passenger, 85-year-old Dorothy Smith, both from Granbury, Texas, suffered minor injuries and were treated at Santa Rosa Medical Center. The driver of the other tractor trailer, 49-year-old Donald Alexander of Bainbridge, Georgia, was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
